Eye Camp - Thalawakela

It is indeed an asset to have an optometrist within our club, with whose assistance, one could work on a project to correct vision of those who may not even know that there could be a problem with their sight. Such was the case when we were in Thalawakale, where a project of Eye correction was attempted on a twin phase method, using the help of an uncle of our Rotaractor Shreapathy Attanayake of MPL Plantations.

Rtr Benjamin Yoga, planned this out so well that during the first phase, the eyes were tested and after a period of 5 weeks the vision corrective spectacles were given. We also had assistance of our Rotary Club of Colombo Uptown, who had given us frames for the same.

It indeed had given us great pleasure to see a whole plantation in Thalawakale, where nearly 125 pairs of spectacles were given to thos who were in need of eye correction.

A mission to correct someone's vision succeeded in grand fashion...!

The Christmas Party

Cancer is indeed quite a disease that has been affecting people of all walks and ages. The Uptown club with the assistance and idea of God mother 'Sulo' had planned a yearly event that helps us to make a few of these cancer stricken patients happy by spending christmas with them.

Santa Clause for our first year was no other than our own Rotaractor Prassanna. He did make them happy with his fake gruffy ho ho and belly.

When god closes the doors, he sees to it that another opens somewhere else. We had been entrusted with that open door to make this young ones feel warmth within their tender hearts. Trying our best in doing that.

The beginning

It was as humble as it could be in the mid April right after the new year that 6 individuals namely Niroshan, Nilan, Jayanthan, Hussain and Lalith who got together under Karthik's leadership to resurrect the defunct club in 2003. This idea was driven by Rtn Sulochana during PP Rtn Joe Edward's period of presidency. The meetings slowly gathered momentum with each person trying to catch hold of whome they knew thereby forming a very young club of 40 individuals, from a variety of areas of interests and work environments.

This was indeed a humble yet strong start, where the club inched forward to have its opening which was a gala event on the 1st November 2003 at the Galadari with nearly 150 participants of which most were from the Rotaract circle. It was then that the Rotaract Club of Colombo Uptown revived itself with a new face, into the new generation.

Since then, the club has been through the changing climates both politically and economically by which lots of members moved to better shores of prospects, thereby the club finding itself new members and new ideas to survive in its goals and orientations to which where it is today with a very low yet extremely powerful membership of 17 Rotaractors who have the experience and will to take this club to heights no other has achieved.
